What is Engawa?

Engawa, meaning “edge-side”, is a Japanese-style veranda that serves as a transition space between indoor living and the outdoors. It is typically a roofed, wooden structure that encircles traditional Japanese buildings, serving the dual purpose of a passageway and a seating area.
