Tomizawa Tea Garden

Introduction

Tomizawa Tea Garden has over 85 years of tea farming history in Kumamoto Prefecture, and have received many famous tea awards in Japan. The family grows tea using Kumamoto's high quality ground water.  They also use natural fermented fertiliser that helps the native micro-organisms to thrive and support the tea plants. 

They produce everything with great care, making sure the tea turns out exactly as they intended. When making single origin teas they do their best to make sure the unique characteristics of that particular cultivar can be fully enjoyed in the tea. With blends and flavoured teas they use high quality ingredients that both highlight the flavour of the ingredients as well as the original tea.

Tomizawa Tea Garden's Story

In April 2016, Mashiki, Kumamoto Prefecture was hit by the Kumamoto Earthquakes with main shock at magnitude 7.0. The earthquakes resulted in hundreds of deaths and countless injuries, and forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate.

Tomizawa Tea Garden was also impacted as their old tea shop was unrepairably destroyed by the earthquake. While this was a huge shock and challenge to the Tomizawa family, with the help of their communityn they built a new shop that opened its doors as Greentea.Lab in 2018.
