List of Tea Cultivars Grown in Japan
This list is a list of the cultivars of the teas in our catalog (sometimes not in our catalog as well, but we hope to find a good source). For a list of Japanese teas and terminology, click here.
I give the Japanese hiragana and kanji both when hiragana is more often used in marketing of the tea cultivar in Japan. If there is a cultivar that you have come across not listed, please let us know. We will also go out and source the cultivar (as resources permit).

- Zairai - 在来 - In English terms, this is not a cultivar but rather seeds grown from trees grown from seeds (etc). This means the plants in the field do not have a specific DNA, but are varied (so not a cultivated variety, the definition of cultivar in English). If it is a field of seeds grown from a specific cultivar such as Yabukita, then you add the term missho—so missho yabukita (実生やぶきた).
