Based in the Yoshiwara district, a mountainous region famous for its sea of clouds within the municipality of Shizuoka City, the family produces about 2 tons of tea altogether per year (first and second flushes).

Murakami-san began producing black tea just a few years ago but has been winning awards in Japan for his production.

Returning to the family tea farm in 1992 to learn tea making from his father and fellow tea farmers in Shimada, Shizuoka, he was deeply surprised at the amount of pesticides used in tea farming.

Switching to organic farming was not an easy task; insects and disease plagued the first field he was given charge of, crop yield and leaf quality dropped, and he faced criticism from both family and other tea professionals. According to Hiroki Murakami, who will become the farm's 4th generation master, the family doesn't know exactly when they started farming tea, though his great-grandfather was the one who built their first processing factory in the late 19th century.

Based in the Yoshiwara district, a mountainous region famous for its sea of clouds within the municipality of Shizuoka City, the family produces about 2 tons of tea altogether per year (first and second flushes).

This deep and distinctive black tea comes from the Kurihara family (based in Yame, Fukuoka prefecture), one of Japan's best at creating a premium green tea called gyokuro. The benifuuki cultivar is well known in Japan for its high level of catechin which will convert smoothly into flavorful tanning when used to create black teas. To appreciate the profoundness of this black tea, it is recommended to drink it straight. However, one may also enjoy it as a milk tea (okay, you can also add sugar or honey!) because it has the astringency that is characteristic of Assam tea.

While Japan is certainly not known for their black tea, innovative and dedicated tea farmers are learning to produce delicate but delicious black teas. This deep and distinctive black tea comes from the Kurihara family (based in Yame, Fukuoka prefecture), one of Japan's best at creating a premium green tea called gyokuro. The benifuuki cultivar is well known in Japan for its high level of catechin which will convert smoothly into flavorful tanning when used to create black teas. To appreciate the profoundness of this black tea, it is recommended to drink it straight. However, one may also enjoy it as a milk tea (okay, you can also add sugar or honey!) because it has the astringency that is characteristic of Assam tea.

As a side note, in general, Japanese black teas have a lower caffeine content than other black teas, so it can be enjoyed by a wide range of people - from children to elders! Please enjoy with sweets that go well with black tea, such as cookies, cakes, and scones.

About the cultivar:The kanaya midori cultivar was created in 1949 in the town of Kanaya, Shizuoka, (now part of Shimada City) by crossing Yabukita and a plant grown from seed known as Shizuoka Zairai #16 (S6). It was registered as a cultivar in 1970, but remains a fairly rare cultivar. As a black tea, it produces a slightly more creamy flavor profile than other cultivars.

Organically produced wakocha (Japanese black tea) from a small family-run farm, Koukien Tea Garden. This single cultivar tea was grown at the foot of the mountains in Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture. Sisters Yurie and Akane Kawaguchi are continuously working hard to make their wakochas more delicious and enjoyable.

About the cultivar:The kanaya midori cultivar was created in 1949 in the town of Kanaya, Shizuoka, (now part of Shimada City) by crossing Yabukita and a plant grown from seed known as Shizuoka Zairai #16 (S6). It was registered as a cultivar in 1970, but remains a fairly rare cultivar. As a black tea, it produces a slightly more creamy flavor profile than other cultivars.
