The houhin is a small Japanese tea pot meant for steeping ultra premium Japanese tea, generally light steamed, largely in-tact tea leaf. This type of tea pot is similar to a Chinese gaiwan in that there is no strainer, but this particular pot provides slits in the lid to act as a strainer.

Made with beautiful white porcelain by artisans in Hasami Village, Nagasaki, a pottery production region with a 4-century history, WDH has packaged this set in a beautiful Paulownia wood gift box. Paulownia wood has traditionally been used in Japan to store valuable goods because the wood has a high ignition point of 400˚C (there are stories of valuable kimono being saved from fire due to this characteristic) and the wood naturally repels insects.

The gift box is also wrapped with a Sanada cord, a traditional craft in which thick cotton thread is interwoven in vertical and horizontal weaves into a flat cord. Since ancient times, it has been used as a string to fasten important things such as the cord of a sword, the decoration of armor, the obi tie of a kimono, and the string of a paulownia wood box for tea ceremony utensils.
